KAST Steelhead Gloves

imageIts been a long winter up here in Alaska, and I’ve been itching to get out and hit some open water after having to satisfy most my fishing needs over the last 4 months on top of the ice. What better place to do it than Steelhead fishing in Yakutat! While there I got the opportunity to review some awesome cold water fishing gear, KAST Steelhead gloves

In the past, I haven’t liked wearing gloves while fly fishing.  Instead, I almost accepted how cold the water and wind made my hands feel. You know the feeling – numb fingers can’t feel the line or hold the fly because they just can’t feel anything.  Meanwhile the 40+ inch steelhead you’ve been stalking all day decides to move elsewhere.

Not anymore- because I’ve found the right fishing gloves for Alaska. The KAST Steelhead glove is both thin enough to maintain agility and thick enough to keep my hands warm.  As mentioned, I tested these gloves while fishing the Situk River near Yakutat, Alaska last month – and I love them!

Kast 2These KAST gloves kept my hands warm and dry in some of the coldest water I’ve ever fished. They really seemed breathable, yet resistant to anything adverse from the outside. The elongated wrist wrap was effective in keeping water from creeping into the glove and made for a nice brace. I really think these KAST Steelhead gloves will work great for all cold-weather fishing, and I’ll definitely be bringing them out this fall as the weather turns cold again and I target the last run salmon and the fall run of steelhead!IMG_0844

The only thing I might change is the palm material.  If the palm had slightly varied material it might help improve grip even more without compromising the ecologically friendly design of the glove.  That being said, I didn’t have too many problems gripping steelhead, Dolly Varden, and sea-run cutthroat trout with these gloves.

If you’re tired of missing fish because your hands are too cold – I would highly recommend these gloves!    Other features worth mentioning:

  • Patented OutDry membrane for true submersion waterproofness
  • 4-way stretch construction for a snug comfortable fit
  • Thin anatomical cut for maximum feel and dexterity
  • Fleece lined for warmth
  • Grippy rubberized fingers and palm for equipment control
  • Palm material minimizes slime loss and damage to fish including anadramous species
  • Soft nose wipe on thumbs
  • Rubberized logo wrist closure for easy grab
  • Rubberized wrist cuff
  • Large fits 9-9.5 inch hands.
